2018 is
the year of the dog, so … let’s do a few posts about dog shrines! Or wolves.I’m
going to start with one that’s quite remote:
Mitsumine Jinja (三峯神社) in Chichibu, a shrine that’s guarded by wolves. It’s on a mountain 1102 m
above sea level. It’s so old that nobody really knows when it was established,
but it’s said to have been built in the 700s by Yamato Takeru (日本武尊 Yamato-takeru-no-mikoto), who may or may not have been a real person.
This shrine is old.Why
